How EcomSupport360 evolved the product buying experience on the DFS website, creating a headless Ecommerce platform powered by Vue Storefront 2 and Magento, with online and offline capabilities.

The Business Needs
Shopping for Ship Essentials Should Work Even Without Signal.
When you’re out in the middle of the sea or on duty, how often do you have a problem finding the best price when shopping for household accessories and industrial tools? Whereas, in the absence of internet connection, browsing through available products, comparing prices and ordering are practically impossible.
That’s the issue that DFS wanted to address, to build an Ecommerce site where potential buyers can get the best price for handpicked ship essentials without needing an Internet connection. The client’s digital goals were also extensive, and included offline support:
- Introduce innovative features tailored to the ship essentials buyer journey
- Raise awareness of the brand in Europe
- Smooth transition from online to offline shopping and vice versa.
- Establish a solid, contemporary online reputation from scratch
- Take advantage of cutting-edge front-end technology for an enhanced user experience
About Our Client
DFS is one of the leading European distributors of home accessories and industrial tools. The brand provides customers with the most popular and sought-after products, such as bedding and towels, cutting tools, hose accessories, kitchenware, and more, and sells them to suppliers and customers at reduced prices. DFS has a global merchant ship product distribution network.
Our Approach
Headless Commerce as the Answer to a Unique Problem.
With a clear vision, the client was looking for assistance with bringing the vision to a technically feasible solution. The offline shopping requirement was a unique one in particular, one which traditional Ecommerce platforms could not address natively.
Following extensive discovery sessions and several brainstorming periods, we settled on a plan that relied on agile methodology and articulated the project into two streams of work: Front-end implementation and Back-end development (with an emphasis on targets).
Considering the client’s requirement for performance, flexibility, and offline option, we suggested Vue Storefront 2 as the front-end framework and Magento as the Ecommerce back-end. This front-end/back-end separation provided the speed and feature flexibility that was required for DFS, and allowed the unique functionality of the offline mode to exist.
The project team consisted of UI/UX professionals, Vue Storefront 2 developers, QA people, and Magento resources all working towards the same goal: to provide the same unified Ecommerce experience in all connectivity environments.

The Solution
A Headless Ecommerce Platform That Works Online and Offline.
We developed DFS’s new Ecommerce store using the latest in headless development, a mix of Vue Storefront 2’s lightning-fast front end and Magento’s powerful commerce backend.
The key to the platform is its ability to seamlessly switch between online and offline shopping modes, allowing customers to browse and search the website even without internet connectivity and export orders without the internet.
The overall design was carefully crafted to retain DFS’ brand identity and style, resulting in the launch of a site that is intuitive and responsive on all devices whilst effectively showcasing the business’ unique niche in the European industrial tools distribution market.
Phase 1: Headless Architecture Setup
Separating Front-End and Back-End for Speed and Flexibility.
The first decision for the project was to implement a headless approach, separating front-end experience from Magento back-end to ensure the speed and flexibility the DFS platform needed.
- Built Vue Storefront 2 to give headless commerce a lightning fast, progressive front-end layer
- Integrated Vue Storefront 2 with Magento back-end to enable fully fledged Ecommerce capabilities including product management, pricing, orders and customer information.
- Steered the choice of the platform architecture that allowed for both online shopping (in real time) and offline shopping without an entire rebuild of either layer.
Phase 2: Offline Shopping Mode
Solving the Core Problem – Shopping Without Signal.
The offline shopping feature was the most distinctive feature of this project. We created a mode switching mechanism that allows the customers to browse and manage their orders at any time without affecting their connection.
- Created a toggle to enable customers to switch between online and offline shopping modes.
- Now supports full product search and browsing without an internet connection – using locally cached data.
- Developed an Order Export ability to export and save the customer’s order selections while offline and complete the order when connected back on line
Phase 3: Front-End Design & UX
A Clean, Brand-Aligned Store Built for Industrial Buyers.
The front-end design was created to reflect DFS’s business niche – a neat, functional interface which sets the brand and is not unnecessarily complex and sits in the mind of customers who know what they want and want to find it quickly.
- Added a clean VSF theme with the branding and product types of DFS.
- Optimized product categories for quick and smooth navigation such as cutting tools, hose accessories, bedding and kitchenware
- Installed cutting edge product filtering to assist consumers in being able to quickly and precisely narrow down ship essentials.
- Ensured full responsiveness across desktop, tablet and mobile for consistent usability on all devices

Final Outcome
A First-of-Its-Kind Platform for Industrial Buyers in Any Connectivity Environment.
You will find that very few people will work with a client that really has a vision for anything different.
DFS recognized a real need and a market that was not being addressed by any direct competitor: the household accessories and industrial tools market segment had a limited number of competitors and the market itself was composed of buyers who must go shopping in low or no connectivity settings. EcomSupport360 provided a platform that was exactly what was needed.
The headless architecture gives DFS the performance and flexibility to evolve the platform over time. Offline mode is a true differentiator, it’s something that no other competitor can match. The clean, functional front-end makes the purchase process as functional as DFS sells its products.
